Firefox OS Officially Announced

Today Mozilla officially announced that mobile phones featuring Firefox OS (formerly Mozilla Boot to Gecko) will be landing in early 2013. Mozilla are clearly hoping to accomplish on mobile; what they did on the desktop. (Although I suspect they want to avoid the spectacular plummet in popularity they’ve been enduring lately.)

In a nutshell; Firefox OS is an open source mobile OS built (almost) entirely upon web technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. New API’s developed by Mozilla will allow HTML5 applications to interface with the underlying capabilities of the device. In Mozilla’s words: ‘Every phone feature (calling, messaging, games, etc.) is an HTML5 application.’

Firefox OS will soon be available through global network providers like Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica and Telenor. The first devices will be manufactured by TCL Communication Technology and ZTE, with an initial focus on low-end smartphones in developing countries.
